The hiring market splits — what to tell your team in a week of bad headlines

2026 layoffs have already topped the whole of last year. And your team is reading the same headlines you are.

Per the layoffs.fyi tracker snapshot on September 10: 128,536 people across 299 tech companies. The market is splitting rather than sinking evenly. Indeed Hiring Lab puts generalist software engineer postings in the US 49% below the February 2020 baseline, while ML engineer openings sit 59% above it. Levels.fyi adds that AI-track staff engineers earn 18.7% more than peers without an AI profile.

Now picture the engineer who spent eight years becoming genuinely good at backend work and opened those numbers this morning. They are not "studying a trend." They are quietly trying it on for size, somewhere between standup and code review.

Which makes a bad-news week the worst time to cancel one-on-ones and the best time to drop the standing agenda. "This won't touch us" is a promise you cannot actually make; tactful silence is just the slower version of the same lie. Here is the contentious part: an honest "I don't know where the market goes" builds more trust than any confident speech. On one condition — it is followed by what you do know and control.

And you control more than it feels like. Whether next quarter's work includes at least one task near ML, data, or agents. Whether internal mobility exists before anyone urgently needs it. Whether the growth plan has a next step with a date on it instead of "someday."

Takeaway for the team lead: this week, open every one-on-one with "what do these headlines mean for you?" and close it with one concrete thing: a task, an internal opening, a dated step in the plan. An order endures by the concord of its chapter, not by reassurance. People stay where they are spoken to like adults.
